Cabela's in Owatonna held its free kids fishing event Saturday, Aug. 8, with more than 250 kids coming out to enjoy the fishing, prizes and great weather.

Volunteers from Owatonna's Youth 1st program, Owatonna Parks and Recreation, the Knights of Columbus and Target assisted with the event. The kids had the chance to fish the ponds at Cabela's for free from 10AM to 2PM. Free hot dogs were provided by Walser Chevrolet. Cashwise Foods gave away root beer floats.

Many participants also walked away with door prizes from Cabela's and Youth 1st.

The Real Winning Team Award was created by Youth 1st and the Owatonna Bullpen Club to recognize the sportsmanship of teams and their fans. Umpires provided team selection votes after games of a summer tournament. Mark Arjes of Youth 1st says, "Too many kids are dropping out of the youth activity process because it is ultra-competitive and not any fun." Of the award he says, "it places the emphasis on how you play the game, which is ultimately more important than if you win or lose."

The Real Winning Team Award is presented in partnership with Youth 1st, Owatonna Parks and Recreation, the Walser Foundation and the Minnesota Twins Community Fund.
