Cougars Top Huskies in Overtime in Girls Hockey Showdown
Owatonna and Mankato East traded opportunities all game long in a battle of early season Big Nine contenders. East prevailed 3-2 in overtime, scoring 57 seconds into the extra session. The loss drops OHS to 2-1-1 in conference play and 2-2-1 overall. East is 3-1 in the league and 5-1 overall.
The goal that might be tougher to swallow for the Huskies was the game-tying tally by the Cougars in the closing seconds of the second period only a minute after the Huskies had retaken the lead on a power play goal at 15:21 of the second. Olivia Herzog won a scramble to a loss puck in the crease after a shot from Kiley Friedrichs at the point hit the inside of the post and came to a stop just inches from the goal line.
East responded with a similar goal on a flurry in front of the Owatonna net with Madison Davis scoring with just 17 seconds to go in the second. After a scoreless third, McKenzie Keller notched the winner in overtime.
The Cougars out shot the Huskies 35-25 in a back-and-forth game that saw each goalie make some spectacular saves. Owatonna's Asia Buryska made 32 saves. Andrea Schreiber stopped 23.
Chloe Schmidt opened the scoring for Owatonna, 2:32 into the second period on the power play with an assist from Ezra Oien. East evened the game at 8:50 of the second, also with an extra skater.
Owatonna hosts Albert Lea Thursday at 7 pm at the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna, then goes to Kasson to play Dodge County Friday night in a big Section 1AA game.
The Faribault girls remained unbeaten with a victory over Austin Tuesday. Check out the game recap and other scores.
