The Owatonna girls basketball team didn't need to move snow Tuesday night in Winona, but they did have to dig themselves out of a hole. The Huskies fell behind 7-0 to open the game and trailed by 12 in the first half. A strong second half lifted OHS to a 51-48 win and season sweep over the Winhawks.

After the early deficit, Owatonna evened the game at 8-8 but Winona went on an 11-1 run and led through the rest of the half, taking a 29-21 lead into the locker room. The 'Hawks' Phoenix Matthees scored nine in the first half but Winona was just 3-for-9 on free throws. Sarah Kingland scored eight in the first half and the Huskies were 7-for-10 from the line.

Owatonna started the second half on a 14-2 run fueled by an aggressive defense that led to multiple turnovers. Holly Buytaert hit a three to give the Huskies its first lead at 32-31. There were six lead changes after that with Kingland putting OHS up for good. She added eight more in the second half to lead Owatonna with 16. Buytaert scored nine, all in the second half.

Sara Anderson scored nine in the game including free throws to ice the game. She missed two freebies with about 20 seconds left but an offensive rebound gave her another chance at the line where she connected on both for a five point lead. Winona hit a two-point basket as time expired. Owatonna outscored Winona 30-19 in the second half for a 51-48 win.

OHS went 11-for-16 of free throws in the second half and 18-for-26 for the game. Winona was just 5-for-16 on free throws. McKenna Schroht hauled in about 13 rebounds for the Huskies.

Owatonna (8-15, 8-12) will host Rochester John Marshall Friday for Senior Night on Kat Kountry 105 FM. Winona (4-19, 3-17) plays Red Wing Friday. The Rockets and Wingers are battled for the Big Nine title.
