507 Area Code Running Out Low On Numbers, New Area Code Coming

Regulators say they are running out of numbers in the 507 area code, saying that a new area code is on the way for southern Minnesota.

612 and 218 were Minnesota's first area codes, with 507 being added in 1954. Since then we've added 320, 651, 952, and 763.

The addition of an additional area code across southern Minnesota could play out two ways.

One option would for all number holders in the 507 area code to keep their current numbers, with new numbers in the area getting the new area code.

The second option would be to do things geographically, dividing southern Minnesota in half, with one portion of the old 507 area code keeping the prefix -- and the other half getting the new area code. A geographic split like that hasn't happened in the United States since 2007.
