Brooklyn Center Officer Identified; Mayor Takes Over Police Dept.

Brooklyn Center, MN (KROC AM News) - The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has released the name of the Brooklyn Center police officer who shot and killed a man during an attempted arrest Sunday.

The BCA - now in charge of the investigation - identified the officer as
Kim Potter, who has been with the Brooklyn Center Police Department for 26 years. She is on standard administrative leave.

According to the BCA, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed the identity of the man who died as 20-year-old Daunte Demetrius Wright of Minneapolis. Wright died of a gunshot wound to the chest and his death has been classified as a homicide.

Wright was pulled over Sunday afternoon and when officers learned he was wanted on a warrant, tried to take him into custody. He got back into his car and as officers were trying to remove him, Potter fired her gun. It was later reported she had meant to use her taser.

The Brooklyn Center City Council Monday voted to turn over command of the police department to Mayor Mike Elliot, who later fired the city manager.
