Faribault Fire Chief Says Space Heaters Okayt When Used Properly

Dusty Dienst, Faribault Fire Chief stopped by KDHL for today's AM Minnesota program to talk about space heaters and snowmobile safety.

Last weekend there was a tragic fire in the Bronx caused by a faulty space heater. Dienst says space heaters are tested for safety.

Dienst outlined what happened during the Faribault space heater fire in November.

One of the recommendations the Faribault Fire Chief made is to plug the space heater directly into an outlet. Don't use an extension cord.

Other tips Dienst has shared repeatedly on KDHL are to keep flammable materials a minimum of 3 feet from a space heater. Never leave it on overnight or unattended.

Don't place in a child's room.

We talked a short period of time about snowmobile safety because it's Snowmobile Safety Awareness Week in Minnesota.

The biggest issue with snowmobiles according to Dienst seems to be speed. Particularly riding too fast at night.

Staying on trails is a DNR recommendation. Dienst hopes all snowmobile operators wear a helmet.
