Faribault Girls Hockey Skates by Austin

The Faribault Falcons girls hockey team had 8 different girls score goals in a 9-2 victory over the Austin Packers Saturday.  Junior goalie Mikayla Bohner picked up her 14th win while collecting 26 saves.  The Falcons outshot the Packers 39 to 28.  Faribault took a 3 goal lead after the first period and had a 6-0 lead before Austin could get on the scoreboard.

Rylie Starkson got the first goal 1:27 into the game unassisted.  At 12:33 mark Abigail Goodwin scored with assists going to Regan Bulger and Bergen Williamson. 15:37 Ashley Rost scored the first of her two goals in the game assisted by Ellie Knutson.  The Falcons outshot the Packers 15-9.

In the second period shots were 12 to 10 in favor of Faribault.  The state's leading scorer Olivia Williamson got her only goal of the game 4:10 into the second period with assists to Abigail Goodwin and Kayli Burkhartzmeyer.  At 9:52 Burkhartzmeyer scored assisted by Tori Pavel.  11:46 Rost tallied her second goal, unassisted.  Austin then connected twice to make it 6-2 at the end of two periods.

Faribault scored 3 third period goals at 9:01, 11:44 and 12:30.  Alli Velander scored assisted by Williamson.  Haley Lang scored assisted by Williamson and Bulger scored a unassisted goal.

The Falcons are 14-4 overall 10-2 in the conference, four points behind Northfield and have more wins in the Big 9 than the Raiders (9-0). Northfield has six four point games and Faribault three four point contests in the Big 9 this season.   There are 11 teams in the conference in girls hockey because Winona does not have a varsity team this year.  That means Faribault will play three more conference games than Northfield.

I know the league coaches agreed to this scoring system but it's unfair.  The Falcons could have two more wins in the league than the Raiders at the end of the season and still not win the Big 9.  Does that really make sense?
