The Faribault Police Department grew by one recently. The newest member of the Faribault Police Department was introduced through the weekly newsletter, The Point After. On top of the newest officer to come aboard the police department, police in Faribault also wanted to make sure residents were aware of Severe Weather Awareness Week being next week, which means tornado drills will be happening in Faribault, and across the state, twice on Thursday.

Officer Valeria Esquivel was sworn in last week by Captain Neal Pederson. Officer Esquivel is a native of Owatonna and is also a graduate of Riverland Community College, where she majored in Law Enforcement. Her first week on the job was quite busy with different orientation activities and initial training. She will next be paired up with Field Training Officers for the next several weeks before being allowed to patrol on her own. If you see Officer Esquivel and her FTO out and about be sure to give her a big Faribault hello!

You are going to hear sirens this Thursday, be ready to practice!

Severe weather awareness week is this upcoming week, with various days of the week having a specific focus. The day that will most likely affect you the most, especially if you have little kids, would be Thursday when the State of Minnesota will be sounding the Emergency Sirens across the state twice for practicing what to do in the event of a tornado or other severe weather coming to our community.

According to The Point After; Outdoor warning sirens will sound in a simulated tornado warning. The first drill is intended for institutions and businesses. The evening drill is intended for second shift workers and families.

Some things you may want to practice at work or with your kids at home is where you will go when there is severe weather in order to protect yourself. If you aren't sure what to do in your office or place of work, you should make a point this week to ask.
