Faribault Volleyball Season Ends in Kasson

The Kasson-Mantorville KoMets defeated the Faribault Falcons in four sets Wednesday in the Section 1AAA Semifinals.

The KoMets won the first set 25-16, the Falcons picked up the second set 25-23, before Kasson-Mantorville won the third 25-16 and fourth 25-15 to extend what could be a very special season.

K-M is now 27-3 and 70-17 in sets.  Faribault ended their year with a 12-16 record and made it to the Section 1AAA Semifinals.  If there is a tougher Section in Class 3A I want to see it.

Kasson-Mantorville was the top seed in the Section because they defeated both Stewartville and Byron during the regular season.

Talk about a loaded Section K-M was rated #2 in the final Class 3A rankings.  Stewartville #3 and Byron #4.  See what I mean about a loaded Section.

The Falcons hung right with the KoMets early in the first set, trailing by a 7-6 score but almost before you could blink it was 16-8. Senior setter 5'6 Maddie Converse is like a quarterback on the floor delivering whatever set assist is necessary.

The strength of this K-M team is the fact the attack can literally come from anywhere on the floor.  Libero senior 5'6 Cate Wanous typically makes pinpoint passes and also made some impressive sets with senior 5'7 Annika Larson, junior Whitney Deno and sophmore 5'7 Ellie Ask on the receiving end.

The trio each had double digit kills.  My statistics (unofficial) showed Deno with 14, Larson with 12 and Ask with 11 kills.

They were our Cashwise Foods and Pharmacy of Owatonna Deliverers of the Match because Cashwise Foods and Pharmacy of Owatonna delivers seven days a week.

To show you how good Kasson-Mantorville is defensively I had Faribault with no double digit kills in any set.

The Falcons were led offensively by Olivia Bauer.  The senior had 13 kills.  Senior Maggie Leichtnam had 8 kills.  Senior Meghan Swanson 6 kills.

The five Faribault seniors were our Malecha's Auto Body Crunch Time Faribault Players of the Match.  Bauer, Swanson, Leichtnam, Aubrey Hatfield, Whitton Wolff.

The Falcons block was excellent in the second set.  Their service receive was not so good.  Kasson-Mantorville had 12 ace serves .  Faribault  3 aces.

Kasson-Mantorville will play Stewartville Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Rochester for the Section title.  The winner advances to next week's MSHSL State Volleyball Tournament.

The Tigers fell behind 2-1 to Byron but reeled off back to bac wins to capture a 5 set victory.

Rochester Mayo 3  Northfield 2.  Spartans won first set 25-21, Northfield second set 25-18, Mayo third set 25-15, Raiders fourth set 25-20 and Mayo 15-7.

Lakeville North swept Rochester Century by scores of 25-11, 15-14, 25-18.

The Panthers and Spartans play in Rochester at 4:00 p.m. for the Section title and a berth into the MSHSL State Volleyball Tournament next week in St. Paul.
