Feeding the Deer About to Become a No No in Steele Co.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has launched a three-pronged attack to cut down on the spreading of chronic wasting disease among the state's deer population.

The part that hits closest to home is the banning of deer feeding in additional counties starting September 1. Starting Sunday you will no longer be allowed to feed the deer in Dodge, Freeborn and Steele Counties. These counties are being added to a list that already includes Mower and Olmsted counties. The DNR stresses that this is a precautionary measure as no cases of CWD have been found in these new counties that will soon ban feeding. Deer that come in contact with other deer pose a threat to the spreading of chronic wasting disease.Eating close together is one way the contact between deer increase.

The DNR is also expanding bag limits in areas where CWD has been found. The third prong of the plan is the limiting movement of deer carcasses.offering
