The Owatonna High School Athletics and Activities office announced that juniors Samantha Fredin and Carson DeKam are the school's nominees for the Minnesota State High School League's ExCEL Award for 2018-19. The annual award recognizes students who are active in sports, fine arts and show leadership in the community.

Fredin performs in the Symphony Orchestra and choir, participates in soccer and track and field, is a gymnastics manager and athletic training student assistant. She is a member of DECA, prom committee, National Honor Society, homecoming committee and Kiwanis Key Club. Fredin is a Sunday School teacher at her church, is involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southern Minnesota, helps with Toys for Tots and is on the Junior Fair Board.

DeKam plays football, basketball and baseball. He is in Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Concert Choir and Men's Choir. He is on the student council, homecoming committee and NHS. DeKam assists with From the Heart, Trio of Friends, Toys for Tots, Salvation Army and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

This is the 23rd year of the state-wide program. Award winners will be announced by the high school league February 4, 2019.
