It might be a little while until the Huskies take the diamond at Fuller Field at Dartt's Park, but high school baseball practice officially began in Minnesota on March 11. Teams across the state sought gym space for their pitchers and catchers to warm up their arms.

The Huskies Bullpen Club newsletter states it this way, "The MSHSL has approved a zero week that allows all pitchers and catchers to start one week ahead of all players to allow them the opportunity to gain arm strength." Full squad practice begins Monday, March 18 at 3:15 pm at Owatonna Middle School.

Owatonna is scheduled to open their season April 4 against Rochester Mayo at Fuller Field. The Huskies can remain hopefully that the field will be ready and the weather cooperates. Last year OHS didn't play its first game until April 24. Six doubleheaders later they completed their regular season May 21. That's 27 days for the entire regular season! View the Huskies schedule here.

OHS went 18-5 overall in 2018, winning the Big Nine Conference title with a 10-1 league mark. The Huskies went 2-2 in the playoffs, beating Rochester John Marshall and Rochester Century before losing back-to-back games to Lakeville North and Farmington.

The 2019 schedule will include single conference games against each Big Nine and several non-conference games against them. Owatonna will play at a two-day event in St. Cloud against Maple Grove, Duluth East and St. Cloud Apollo May 3-4.

The Huskies' newsletter reports on several improvements for all ages of local baseball.

  • New bats for minor league teams
  • Dugouts added to both fields at Manthey Park
  • A new batting cage ordered for Jaycee Park, plus mound improvements
  • A resurfaced infield at McKinley school field
