Is Your Vehicle Affected by New Airbag Recall in Minnesota?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordered the recall late Tuesday that could affect 3-million vehicles, including some here in Minnesota.

Are you driving one of the vehicles affected by this latest NHTSA recall? You could be, if you happen to be driving one of six Ford model vehicles made between 2007 and 2012. According to this NDTV story, the recall affects Ford models including the Ford Ranger and the Ford Fusion, and concerns potential problems with airbags made by Takata.

According to the NHTSA website, this recall is only the latest regarding ongoing potential problems with Takata airbags. (There was already a massive Takata recall back in 2019.)  "Long-term exposure to high heat and humidity can cause these airbags to explode when deployed. Such explosions have caused injuries and deaths," NHTSA said, noting that there have been 18 deaths in the U.S. already related to the problem.

So, what should you do? How do you know if YOUR vehicle is affected? The NHTSA actually makes it pretty easy to find out-- but you WILL need your vehicle's 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN.) If you click HERE, you can enter your VIN in the NHTSA database and see if there are any outstanding recalls involving your vehicle that could have been issued.

And, if you ARE affected by this latest recall (which was issued Tuesday, January 19th), the story said your vehicle's manufacturer should be contacting you with information on what to do, and how to get your vehicle serviced, within the next 30 days.

It's kind of scary to think that the airbags in your vehicle could possibly explode and cause an injury, isn't it? They're supposed to keep us safe, aren't they?
