Egyptians used to worship cats, and they have never forgotten this. So, it stands to reason that there is a day dedicated to cats, International Cat Day. Celebrated on August 8th, it was first created by The International Fund for Animal Welfare in 2002.

You can get lost in the too many to count cat videos on YouTube, shared on Facebook and other social media platforms. There's even a cat video festival, called CatFest here in Minnesota, happening today. They are promising a special tribute to Grumpy Cat, who passed away earlier this year.

Of course, anyone who has a feline companion in their home knows that you cannot own a cat, rather they own you! Dogs they say have owners, Cats have staff. That is what my family is to our two feline furballs, Serabi and Creeper. They expect a full food dish at all times and to be revered and pampered, but, only on their own terms. Much like a human teenager.

If you have any cats or enjoy cats, know that today is the day to really appreciate them, and celebrate their uncanny way of running the household. Give them hugs, just make sure to put them down BEFORE they decide to scratch! Maybe give them some catnip before you try to love on them. Keep them mellow.

You can also follow up on the story of the cat that went through the washing machine, proving that cats do have 9 lives.
