The annual Minnesota Boys Hockey State Tournament is once again drawing thousands of fans to Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, and while we now know who will be battling for the Class A and AA championships, there was a little bit of drama to get here.

The Class A championship saw #3 Warroad upset top-seeded Hibbing/Chisholm 4-3 in an overtime thriller.

On Saturday night, it's the #1 seed Minnetonka facing #2 Moorhead for the Class AA championship, as Moorhead looks to win its second straight state title.

To reach the championship game, Moorhead defeated #3 Edina on Friday night, and the drama began at the end of that game.

Tempers Flare, Brawl Breaks Out Between Edina and Moorhead

The defending champion Moorhead Spuds defeated the Edina Hornets 3-1 on Saturday night at Grand Casino Arena, and as time expired, booing could be heard from the fans, and then a brawl broke out between the teams.

A linesman appeared to try to break up the fight, but he was knocked down during the melee.

The television broadcasters commented that the fight happened after a Moorhead player lost his stick, and as he went to pick it up, a player from Edina whacked it away. That's what the fans were booing about, and what ultimately led to the fight, which you can see below.

It's worth noting that the Moorhead players had left their bench to celebrate the victory just before the brawl, but Edina's head coach, Curt Giles, was able to keep his players on the bench during the fight. That discipline prevented things from being even worse.

Reports indicate that an Edina hockey player was assessed a 10-minute game misconduct for his involvement the fight. That player was expected to sit out the remainder of the tournament.
Edina ended up losing the third-place game to Rosemount 4-2 on Saturday, while Moorhead pulled off the upset and defeated top-seeded Minnetonka in double overtime to repeat as Class AA state champions.
