Will We Be Able To Have A Campfire On Memorial Day Weekend?
Wildfires are still burning across Minnesota after we had red flag warnings over the weekend. The strong winds gusting over 30 MPH made it easy for fires to spread rapidly.
Dry + Windy Conditions Lead To Red Flag Warnings
Firefighting planes and helicopters have been dumping water across Minnesota, despite one of them even getting shot at. Seriously, who shoots at an airplane? Authorities have arrested a suspect.
I went up to the cabin this weekend to put the pontoon in for the season. That was an ordeal with the whitecaps on the lake, but we got it done. Usually, I'd end the day with a campfire, but with the red flag warning, I didn't want to be the guy who started a fire.
Red Flag Warning - Campfires Discourage
It was the same last weekend, too. So here we are coming up on Memorial Day Weekend, and I'm really hoping to be able to have a campfire and burn up some brush from spring cleaning.
Rain Is On The Way
I'm feeling optimistic about it, as we do have some chances of rain over the region. Across much of Minnesota, there are burning restrictions. In most cases, campfires are allowed unless it's specifically stated otherwise. No open burning restriction is in effect now.

Another positive for the weather is that the winds are dying down and shouldn't be nearly as high as they were over the weekend. That should help firefighters get control of the wildfires.
What Is A Legal Campfire In Minnesota?
The Minnesota DNR says a campfire should not be wider than 3 feet in diameter, and no taller than 3 feet high. You should have any combustibles cleared out within a 5-foot radius of the fire. Never leave a campfire unattended, and be sure to extinguish the fire with the stir and drown method.
