My favorite part of Halloween growing up was obviously trick-or-treating. Back in the 90s, we'd grab a flashlight and we'd go out on our own looking for a bag of loot. Heck, we even knocked on doors that didn't have a light on.

Yeah, it was a different time and I grew up in a small town in Northern Minnesota. But Halloween was different. Last night we had the decorations up and the candy bowl ready. And, just like the past few years, almost zero trick-or-treaters.

Why is that? I think there are a few things causing it. For one, the weather last night across Minnesota and Wisconsin wasn't great. We had snow, rain, sleet, ice, and heavy winds. That no doubt kept some people home.

I think the main reason people's kids aren't going door to door anymore is because of all the Trunk-or-Treats happening. It's a Halloween tailgating and they are everywhere. The school had one, churches have them all over the place. It's supposed to be a safer option for kids to go trick or treating, but recent research doesn't agree.

NPR did a story on it, and they said there really isn't any proof that Trunk Or Treating is any safer.

One of the vivid memories I had as a kid was being taught that a stranger offering candy from their car would try to kidnap you. I swear I thought it was going to happen. Fortunately, it never did. But here 30 years later we are sending our kids to strangers' cars in a parking lot for candy. Am I the only one who sees the irony in that?

I'll keep buying candy to hand out every year. Who knows, maybe there are other people like me who miss the way Halloween used to be.
