When Target opened its first store in Roseville, Minnesota, back in 1962, the product it’s now rolling out in some stores would’ve been considered very illegal. and it stayed that way for decades.

That changed on August 1, 2023, when Minnesota became the 23rd state in the U.S. to legalize recreational marijuana. The new law opened the door for local entrepreneurs and gave major retailers a chance to explore new products tied to the growing cannabis industry.

Target Quietly Begins Selling THC Beverages in Minnesota

According to Marijuana Moment, Target, the Minnesota-based retail giant with nearly 75 stores across the state, has begun testing the sale of THC-infused beverages in select locations. The rollout was confirmed by Jason Dayton, co-founder of Trail Magic, who shared a photo of several brands of THC drinks appearing on Target shelves late last week.

In a post on LinkedIn, Dayton wrote, “This launch validates years of hard work by hundreds of people and brands across our industry who have led with safety, consumer education, and a desire to meet the needs of a new generation.”

Target's Minnesota Move Is Big For THC

While THC beverages have quietly appeared in liquor stores and CBD specialty shops around the state, Target’s move marks the first major national retailer to enter the Minnesota THC market.

Currently, only about 10 Target stores are part of the pilot program, but if the results go well, a statewide rollout, and expansion into other legalized states, could follow.
