Operation: Mindcrime

A concept album/rock opera released by Queensrÿche in 1988, Operation: Mindcrime follows the story of a drug addict named Nikki. Nikki gets disillusioned by a corrupt society (oooh, relatable!) and becomes a political assassin. Read the full story (and crank up the album!) here.

Operation: Mindcrime Nerd Facts

  • the album took nearly two years to produce
  • the album was recorded, mixed, and mastered in the digital format
  • the concept of the album was inspired by Geoff Tate's casual chats with a militant Quebec separatist movement, as well as his memories of friends who became junkies
  • in 1990, a live recording of the album performed in its entirety called Operation: Livecrime was released
  • in 2006, Operation: Mindcrime was re-released as a box set
  • also in 2006, a sequel - Operation: Mindcrime II - was released, which continued the story of Nikki
  • Kerrang! magazine ranked Operation: Mindcrime as the 34th greatest heavy metal album of all time in 1989.
