
Winona Police Investigating Fatal Duplex Fire
A resident on the first floor told officers a person was believed to be inside of the burning apartment upstairs.
Winona, MN (KROC-AM News)- Authorities in Winona responded to a fatal fire the broke out Wednesday morning

First responders were called to the scene around 4:15 a.m.
A news release issued by the Winona Police Department says officers were the first to arrive and saw heavy smoke coming from an upstairs window. The officers immediately requested firefighters at the scene.

Authorities Investigating Fatal Wednesday Morning Fire at Winona Duplex
The fatal fire broke out at a duplex in the 550 block of East 3rd St. A resident on the first floor told officers a person was believed to be inside of the burning apartment upstairs.
Officers then breached the apartment's door after getting no response from knocking, the news release says.
Police were only able to open the door a few inches and discovered it had been barricaded by stacked furniture and household items, authorities say.
Winona Firefighters then entered the apartment through a second-floor window, located a man inside and brought him outside to begin treatment. Despite life-saving measures, the man was pronounced dead, according to the news release.
He is being described as the 33-year-old resident of the apartment. His name has not been released.
Winona Police say the deadly fire is under investigation. No other injuries were reported and a damage estimate is not available.
