Red Wing, MN (KROC-AM News) - A 27-year-old Red Wing man has been charged with causing the death of his 2-month-old son.

Hunter McCutchen is facing two counts of first-degree manslaughter, two counts of second-degree manslaughter, and child endangerment charges stemming from the child's death at St. Marys Hospital early Thursday morning. Red Wing Police say the baby was airlifted to Rochester on Tuesday after officers responded to a call about a baby not breathing.

According to a news release, the Red Wing Fire Department also responded to the residence in the 500 block of Maple Street and found the infant unresponsive. The emergency personnel then performed lifesaving measures before the child was initially brought to the Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital in Red Wing.

According to the criminal complaint, x-ray images ordered by Mayo Clinic physicians in Rochester showed multiple rib fractures in various stages of healing along with a leg fracture that "are highly suggestive of nonaccidental trauma in an infant." The court document also says imaging of the infant's head and brain showed multiple areas of bleeding on the brain that pointed to "shaken baby syndrome" as a possible cause of the child's severe injuries.

The criminal complaint also indicates the child's mother suspected McCutchen of harming the baby and had taken cell phone photos of bruising and other marks on the infant prior to last Tuesday. She later contacted Red Wing Police and indicated that McCutchen had confided in her that he had hurt the infant. She also shared an audio recording she had made with her cell phone of a conversation with McCutchen during which he is heard admitting that he had become overwhelmed and had shaken the baby.
