‘Life-Threatening’ Recall Alert on Cough Syrup in Minnesota
A big cough syrup recall is affecting Minnesota. It comes at a pretty bad time, too, because this is the time of year when a lot of people are getting sick and looking for relief with cough syrup.
If you have cough syrup sitting in your medicine cabinet (who doesn't?) then you'll want to check this out.
Voluntary Recall on Popular Cough Syrup
This voluntary recall from parent company Haleon was announced just yesterday, January 24th. The brand that they're issuing this recall on is the Robitussin cough syrup. Specifically, the Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult and Robitussin Honey CF Max Nighttime Adult.
The announcement of this recall says that the products are being recalled "due to microbial contamination."
What Microbial Contamination Can Cause
This microbial contamination could cause "severe or life-threatening adverse events" like fungemia or disseminated fungal infection in individuals who are immunocompromised.
What is fungemia and disseminated fungal infection? My understanding is that fungemia is when fungi or yeast end up infecting the bloodstream. And disseminated fungal infection is when a fungal infection spreads throughout the body.
Yep, not good.
If you are not immunocompromised "life-threatening infections are not likely to occur. However, the occurrence of an infection that may necessitate medical intervention cannot be completely ruled out."
As of right now, the company hasn't received any reports of illness or death related to the products in question, which is good news.
