Owning a home is still a pretty big deal. For a lot of people, it’s the American dream and one of the best ways to build long term wealth. I mean, who really wants to pay someone else's mortgage for the rest of their life?

Of course, what you’ll pay for a home can vary a lot depending on where you look. We recently heard that Rochester is more expensive than living in the cities now. That blew my mind. But after digging into home prices around the area, a few of these towns really surprised me. Spoiler alert: Rochester is not number one on this list.

Even with mortgage rates hovering around the 6 percent range lately, demand for homes in certain areas hasn’t slowed much. Location, neighborhood demand, school districts, and even proximity to Rochester can all play a role in what buyers are willing to pay.

That’s exactly what a new report from Stacker set out to find. Some of the towns on the list totally make sense. While others might make you do a double take. I definitely expected Rochester to be a lot higher.
