Here’s When You Need to Be Ready To Watch The Eclipse in Northern Illinois

The total solar eclipse that will be visible in Illinois on Monday, April 8, 2024 is a phenomenon we won't get to see so brilliantly until 2044, so everyone should make sure they don't miss it!

Watching the Total Solar Eclipse in Illinois

If you've been following all the hubbub about the eclipse path of totality that will cross over Illinois on Monday, you probably know that our southern Illinois neighbors will be getting the best show and prime viewing locations.

For those of us in Northern Illinois, (who don't intend to drive South for the show), experts say we can expect to see 91% of the moon covering the sun, which still sounds cool to me. So, what time exactly should we have our eclipse glasses on and our eyes on the sky?

When Will the Solar Eclipse Be Visible in Northern Illinois?

The other day my kids' school sent home a permission slip for parents to sign that would allow our kids to watch the eclipse at school (with glasses they are providing). I signed it, but then I wondered, what time will they be taking the kids out to see it?

The eclipse process is estimated to be about two and half hours long, and will be visible in our area starting around 12:50 p.m. and last until roughly 3:20 p.m. Now the next big question is; will the weather cooperate for prime viewing conditions?

Here's what Eyewitness News Chief Meteorologist Candice King has to say;

After seeing those times, I'm guessing my kids' school will be taking them out to watch the eclipse right before they release for the day.

If your kids won't be watching the eclipse at school, and don't have eclipse glasses, you better send them to school with some on Monday! Remember, it is unsafe to stare at the eclipse at any time without eye protection, and we don't want them getting out of school, immediately looking up and harming their eyes!
