Taj arrived at the Lake Superior Zoo on January 7th. He replaces Lana, the former resident of the zoo, who passed away 2 months ago at the age of 15 due to illness. Taj comes from the Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend, Indiana.

Everything fell into place; South Bend had too many tigers,

Dave Thompson, the Director of Animal Management, shared his thoughts with the Duluth News Tribune yesterday. “So, (it was) a little bit of luck, but also a little bit of planning as well.”

For now, Taj will be help in the upper balcony of his enclosure until the zoo feels like he is ready to be seen at the lower level. The reason behind this is it allows Taj to grow accustom to his new living quarters and to have less eye contact with visitors thus allowing for a less threatening environment.

Amur Tigers are considered endangered as they are threatened by poachers and deforestation in Russia and Eastern China.

The Lake Superior Zoo is Open weekly from 10a-4p
