Austin, MN (KROC-AM News) - There was a fatal officer-involved shooting in Austin last night.

A news release from Austin Police Chief David McKichan says the deadly shooting occurred during a confrontation at a Kwik Trip convenience store shortly after 9:30 PM following a more than 24-hour long standoff at a nearby apartment complex. McKichan says the man was armed with a knife, and at one point, one of the officers fired their gun and shot the man. Despite efforts to render medical assistance, the man died at the scene.

The standoff at the apartment building began after Austin Police responded late Wednesday afternoon to a report of a man walking in traffic holding a knife. The news release says the officers discovered the knife was actually a machete.

After speaking with the man in an effort to disarm him, Chief McKichan says he walked into a residence, where multiple unsuccessful attempts were made to subdue him using Tasers. The man then retreated further into the apartment in the 1200 block of 4th Avenue Northwest and threatened to harm other people. That's when the Austin/Mower County tactical team was called to the property.

The news release says officers tried to negotiate with the man and made several unsuccessful attempts to dislodge him using pepper gas and less-lethal foam bullets. Around 6 PM Thursday, a decision was made to reduce the police presence to uniformed officers to monitor the situation and keep citizens safe.

Several hours later, the man emerged from the apartment and walked to the convenience store on Oakland Avenue West, leading to the deadly confrontation. The man's name has not been released.

The Minnesota Bureau of criminal apprehension is in charge of the investigation.
