The Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley, MN has a hospice program to help terminally ill pets find a forever home, for however long they have left. This is such a sweet program, it helps put a spotlight on these pets that would otherwise have a really hard time getting adopted.

The Human Society veterinarian Dr. Sara Lewis spoke with KARE 11. She said, "They're happy, healthy enough for adoption. We just know that the end outcome is going to come sooner than later. We're trying to find these animals homes. Most places would just euthanize them."

Michael Kyllo-Kittleson adopted Mabel, a dog who was a part of this hospice program because she had congestive heart failure. She was 10-years-old when she was adopted. Unfortunately, Mabel died just a year and a half after being adopted, but she was in a loving home at the end of her life. Michael said to KARE 11, "It's the way I'd want to go out, with people who love me surrounding me. It's special to be able to do that. They're not finishing out their days in the shelter by themselves."
