Supporting those who have served our country is personal for me. My dad was a proud veteran, having enlisted in the Army and served two years in Vietnam.

He then served as a police officer in my hometown back in Wisconsin for over 30 years. He never mentioned his time in the service unless I asked him about it. It turns out he felt guilty for having returned home — when many of the guys he served with weren't so lucky. He was able to reconnect with some of his Army buddies later, and the joy he felt is something I won't forget.

Here in Minnesota, our government and nonprofit organizations offer so much support to veterans in all stages of their lives. DAV of Minnesota (Disabled American Veterans) offers free transportation to VA appointments, outdoor recreational therapy, specialized assistance for female veterans, benefits assistance, and more. Many of the volunteers are also veterans, ensuring there are plenty of opportunities for veterans to meet, support, and swap stories with others who may have similar experiences.

They are also encouraging veterans and their supporters to advocate for better state policies for veterans and their families at the annual Veterans Day on the Hill on April 23, 2026, at the Cedar St. Armory and the Capitol Rotunda, both in St. Paul. Veterans Day on the Hill is a yearly event where Veterans across the state come together to raise their voices and meet with their lawmakers about Veterans issues. This year Veterans will rally to discuss property taxes.

The day of advocacy often focuses on addressing veterans' homelessness and housing needs, mental health and suicide prevention resources, property tax exclusions and similar benefits, and county veterans service officers and statewide programs. DAV will reimburse any group providing free transportation to Veterans Day on the Hill half the cost of a charter bus or large van. Click here to learn more.

When I think of the joy my dad experienced reconnecting with his old Army buddies, I hope Veterans throughout Minnesota find similar support and joy in ways that are meaningful to them. If you'd like to get involved with Veterans Day on the Hill or DAV, visit davmn.org.
