Have you heard that Minnesota has a brand new city? They just elected a mayor and city council.

It's not every day that Minnesota gets a new city, but the state got one yesterday.

Empire in Dakota County just southeast of the Twin Cities has become Minnesota's newest city.

They were formally just Empire Township with a population of around 1300 in 1990.

Today Empire Township boasts a population of around 3300.

The cities of Rosemount and Farmington have seen lots of growth in recent years which has spilled over to Empire Township.

Farmington has a population of 23,632 as of the 2020 census. It is considered a part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.

Rosemount is on the southern edge of the Twin Cities Metro Area with a population of around 25,650 as of the 2020 census.

Going forward Empire, Minnesota will go into the books as the township that became a little city on Valentine's Day 2023. Kinda romantic.
