Minnesota’s Fox Sports North Going Away For Good in Two Weeks
We'd heard about a month ago that Fox Sports North was leaving Minnesota, and now we know when it'll be gone for good.
Fox Sports North is a familiar name if you like to watch the Minnesota Twins, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Minnesota Lynx, Minnesota UFC, or the Minnesota Wild, seeing as it's the regional sports network that's held the broadcast rights for those Minnesota teams since 1989. Of course, it was called Midwest Sports Channel (MSC) back then and didn't become known as Fox Sports North until the late 90's.
But it won't be around here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes much longer. It's all because it's being replaced (or 'rebranded,' as marketing folks like to say these days) as Bally Sports North, thanks to a change in ownership. According to this story in The Athletic, Fox Sports North and other regional Fox Sports channels (including 21 other regional Fox Sports networks, like Fox Sports Wisconsin) were purchased by the Sinclair Broadcasting Group back in 2019.
But they're just NOW undergoing a name change now to reflect Sinclair's new naming rights sponsor, which is the Bally's Corporation (better known as just 'Ballys'). It owns and manages 11 casinos across seven states. It's in the process of adding four more casinos to its holdings and is no doubt looking to publicize its various brands.
So, yeah, Bally Sports North will be your new home for the Twins, Timberwolves, Lynx and Wild. And that change is going to happen in the next two weeks. According to this post on the FS North Instagram page, 'the story continues,' with the channel switching to its new name on March 31st.
Of course, Fox Sports North isn't the only familiar brand that will be relegated to the dust bin. There have been a LOT of brands that, for one reason or another, have folded, gone out of business or have just gone away over the years.
