The Morristown Morries came all the way through the elimination bracket to capture the third seed Saturday from Region 6C punching their ticket to the State Amateur Baseball Tournament.  The Morries defeated Henderson Friday night 4-2, then Belle Plaine 2-1 Saturday morning before their 7-6 win over the Eagle Lake Expos to collect 5 wins and capture the #3 seed.

In their 6C opener they fell to St. Peter 4-3.  Morristown downed the Arlington A's 11-3, then rolled over Wells 12-2 to advance to the final weekend of the tournament.

The last time Morristown was at state I was a 30 year old and called their game in Granite Falls.  I believe they defeated Maple Lake in the opening round at Granite Falls and then lost to eventual runner-up St. James in Marshall.

I still have a tape of that game and believe it or not from time to time I put it in my stereo and listen to that 30 year old calling the Morries State Tournament game  Unfortunately I have only one tape from the middle innings.  The start of the game and end of the game are missing.

Morris beat St. James for the Class C title and Miesville defeated Hamel for the Class B title in 1989.  Morristown was also in the 1988 State Amateur Baseball Tournament and fell in the opening round 7-4 to Lonsdale.

Here are some of the names from their 1989 appearance.  Joe Grose had 5 hits against Maple Lake by the 7th inning.  My tape runs out in the 7th inning with Morristown leading 9-6 and clubbing 17 hits by that point.  Dave Rux was the pitcher for the Morries.  His battery mate was Kevin Studnicka.  Tim Wagner was at third base.  Some other names that should be familiar to Morristown fans were Terry Schwichtenberg, Barry Fritz, Kurt Spitzcak and big Mike Schumacher.  Rick Vollbrecht was one of the coaches.
