Kiko Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Lounge had to defend itself after a photo went viral showing a $2.19 COVID-19 surcharge.

In the photo has been shared over 300 time on Twitter, It shows a COVID-19 surcharge added to the total of the bill. But what exactly is the surcharge and why was it applied to the total? Kiko Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Lounge, in West Plains Missouri, took to their Facebook page to explain the reasoning behind the charge and why it was necessary.

Please understand we are not doing this to take advantage of you guys! We are doing this hoping we can adjust the surcharge weekly rather than just raise all of our prices on our menu due to increase prices from our supplier on meat, poultry, seafood & produce.

With the recent closures of many meat plants, Kiko like many restaurants are seeing the cost of product go up. So instead of raising the cost of the items on their menu, Kiko decided to add a surcharge to the final total of customers bills. Unfortunately, many people have disagreed with this and with viral photo going around, Kiko and their employees have been harassed.
