This seems to be a sign of a good rivalry. The Owatonna High School boys soccer team beat Austin for the first time in five years Thursday night and took the occasion to pose for a team picture on the pitch at Art Hass Stadium in Austin.

The Huskies prevailed 3-0. Their last win over the Packers was in 2016. Austin has won the Big Nine title each of the last four seasons.

Owatonna got on the board midway through the first half as Benny Bangs finished off a nice give-and-go. Bangs nearly scored again before halftime but rang the ball hard off the post. OHS led 1-0 at the half.

Bangs scored about 15 minutes into the second half on a direct kick from straight on and just above the penalty box. The keeper got a piece of it, but the ball rolled past into the left corner of the net.

OHS coach Bob Waypa said Bangs presents plenty of match-up problems for opponents and referred to Bangs as a "linebacker." OHS finished the scoring near the midway point of the second half on a breakaway goal by Garrett Karsten. Waypa said the Huskies speed is tough to contend with. Hear the full interview with Waypa during Saturday's AM 1390 KRFO / 94.7 FM High School Coaches Show, beginning at 9 am.

Bangs left the game with a leg injury after a questionable hard tackle. The Huskies were already missing a few players due to injury. Nils Gantert got the shutout in goal. Owatonna hosts New Prague Saturday, September 11 at the Lincoln Complex in Owatonna at 1 pm as part of the boys-girls doubleheader.

The OHS girls whipped Austin 9-0 Thursday.

Only a couple of days ago another OHS team, the volleyball squad, celebrated an historic win, topping Farmington for the first time in six years and celebrating on the court by singing the school song.
