Owatonna Football Tradition Continues with Youth Camp

The Owatonna football tradition has extended to a new generation. Players who attended as youth have gone through the varsity program and come back as coaches or alumni to pass along their knowledge. The 26th annual Owatonna Huskies Youth Football Camp runs August 8-11 at the OHS fields from 5:30 to 8 pm each night. The camp is open to those entering third through tenth grade.

The philosophy of the camp is "to teach the fundamentals of offense, defense, and the kicking game to each participant," according to the Owatonna football website. "Our most important goal is that the kids have fun while learning and playing the great game of football."

Walk-up registration will be accepted Monday, but organizers advise people to arrive early if they still need to sign up. The cost is $80. Current Owatonna coaches lead the camp with varsity players and alumni running the drill stations.

Players entering third through sixth grade will be taught skills related to all positions on offense and defense. Players going into seventh through tenth grade will choose a position on offense and defense to focus on during the week.

The camp has run for 25 straight years, making some modifications in 2020 in order to continue the legacy.

Champs Return to Youth Football Camp

Players should wear athletic clothing and cleats. Gloves are optional. Water will be provided. Players do not need to bring a water bottle. Participants will get an Owatonna football t-shirt.

Owatonna Park and Rec will hold a sign-up day on Wednesday, August 10 for players entering third through sixth grade. Hy-Vee Foods sponsors a hot dog cook-out on Wednesday as well.
