Owatonna’s Macy Lands Head Coaching Job

She was one of the most dominant players in Minnesota high school hockey history and her passion is evident still. Owatonna graduate Lindsay Macy has been announced as the new women's head coach at Finlandia University in Michigan. Macy scored over 400 points while skating for the Huskies and was part of a pair of state tournament teams.

Macy went on to play for the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Minnesota State University-Mankato. I ran into her this past winter when OHS was playing at the Farmington holiday tournament. Macy told me she was excited about the hockey schools she was conducting in Idaho. I enjoyed her stories about how a hockey team can become like a family.

In a press release from Finlandia University, Macy states, "It is my goal to use hockey as an avenue to help student-athletes develop into positive role models and leaders at Finlandia, in their communities and among their families."

Athletic Director Curtis Wittenbreg said, "I'm very pleased that Lindsay is taking over our program. Her playing, coaching and administrative experiences are going to be assests not only for the women's hockey team but for Finlandia University as a whole. Lindsay brings energy and enthusiasm, which the program will benefit from."

Macy's experience past her playing days includes stints in both the boys and girls hockey programs at Owatonna High School, the Coeur d'Alene (ID) AAA girls program, private and groups lessons, and hockey schools for players of all ages.

She said, "I am excited to take over as the leader of a women's hockey program that already has great athletes, administration, and community support. I look forward to using my experience, excitement, and passion for the game to continue the process of creating a culture of success at Finlandia."

After scoring about 300 goals and adding about 100 assists with the Huskies by the time she graduated in 2004, Macy scored 74 points in 66 games with Badgers and added 44 more points in 62 games with the Mavericks. She also spent time with the National under-22 team and played a season with the Minnesota Whitecaps. The team won the Western Women's Hockey League championship with Macy.

Macy has a BS degree in sports management with a minor in marketing from MSU-Mankato. She officially began her duties as coach of the Lions on Monday, May 11. Good luck, Lindsay!
