Owatonna High School graduate Peter Jones has enjoyed some nice weather and low scores in recent weeks with the University of Minnesota golf team. In a late September tournament in Arizona, Jones shot 3-under for the tournament for a career-best sixth place finish individually and paced the team to a sixth place showing as well.

In a story posted on the Gophers' website, Jones said that he hadn't had the best finishes in some tournaments, "Going into the week, I focused a lot on accuracy off the tee, since it was such a tight golf course. I've always enjoyed playing in Arizona, and one of my strengths is trying to be accurate off the tee early."

Jones, a junior, followed that up with a 7-under par tournament in Calfornia, his best score relative to par as a Gopher. He also shot his best individual round at 67. Jones finished 10th, while the team took 11th place, according to gophersports.com. Four of his last six rounds have been under par.

The Gophers have one more fall tournament October 23-24 in Texas. The spring season starts in February. Jones is a 2015 OHS grad who was a two-time state runner-up at the high school state tournament.
