Recommendations for the Future of Rochester Civic Theater
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Although it is still facing financial struggles, there appears to be a future for Rochester Civic Theater.
But it will likely be operated under a much different model than in the past.
The Rochester City Council decided earlier this year to pursue a different relationship with RCT after learning of serious financial problems and other issues and began the process of terminating its lease of the city-owned property it had been operating in for years.
A City Council committee met with RCT board members Thursday morning and received an in-depth report on its finances.
City Councilmember Michael Wojcik says during the meeting, it was decided to recommend the lease be replaced by a new operating agreement. He says it has also been recommended this year’s budgeted city funds for RCT be released to help cover its utility bills and other approved expenses. Wojcik says the recommendations will be taken up by the City Council Aug. 3rd.
RCT only has one fulltime employee, interim managing director Misha Johnson. All other employees were let go earlier this year.
Wojcik was an early and outspoken critic of the previous board and director but says he is satisfied with the leadership changes that have taken place. Wojcik is especially impressed with the work Johnson has done so far. He called her the type of leader “they’ve needed at RCT for a long, long time.” He also praised her for bringing all community theater groups together in an effort to help RCT move forward.
