Record-Setting Return to Sports

Owatonna sophomore Logan Norrid made a big splash on the night Huskies sports returned after a five-and-a-half month layoff. The two-time state meet participant set a pair of OHS records while swimming in the middle school pool as part of a virtual meet against Rochester John Marshall.

Norrid broke the 200 free record with a time of 2:01.58, clipping .31 seconds off the previous record of 2:01.89 held by Mattie Shaver since 2014. Norrid then smashed the 100 breaststroke mark with 1:06.78, undercutting Elise O'Neill's record of 1:08.48 set in 2011 by 1.7 seconds.

Owatonna will swim Tuesday, September 1 in a virtual meet against Mankato West. Action begins at 5 pm and can be watched through streaming video from OwatonnaLive.com.

OHS girls tennis opened their season Thursday with a 5-2 victory over Mankato West at the high school courts in stifling conditions. Temperatures were a bit lower than Tuesday when Owatonna match at Century was postponed. But high humidity made for uncomfortable conditions Thursday.

Owatonna swept the doubles and took two of the four singles matches to beat the Scarlets. The teams finished in a tie for third in the Big Nine in 2019.

In doubles, Caitlynne Bussert/Cora Barrett won 7-6, 6-2. Lauren Thamert/Klara Blacker prevailed 6-4, 7-5. And Emma Herzog/Olivia Shaw swept their opponents 6-4, 6-3. In singles, Megan Johnson dominated 6-2, 6-0 and Olivia McDermott won when her opponent was forced to retire. Olivia Herzog played top singles and Alex Huemoeller took losses.

The Huskies match at Century, rescheduled from Tuesday was postponed on Friday morning due to thunderstorms. It has been put on the schedule for Tuesday, September 8 at 4:30 pm at Century High School. Owatonna's next match is now Tuesday, September 1 at Mankato East at 4:30 pm.

The last time an Owatonna High School team played was March 7 when the boys basketball squad was in the section tournament, a span of nearly 175 days without varsity competition.
