Back in July, the Science Museum of Minnesota announced that they were holding a Minnesota State Fossil Election. This was to determine which fossil Minnesotans think should be the official state fossil. The results are in and today, on International Fossil Day, they announced the winner.

During voting in July, based on the Science Museum's website, it appears people had to decide between 9 different fossils. I'm not going to lie, I couldn't tell you what most of them are. I'm glad to say that I do recognize the winner of the vote, however!

The official winner of the Minnesota State Fossil Election is... the giant beaver! The funny thing is, according to Bring Me the News, the giant beaver was actually a write-in vote. Evidently, enough people agreed because it won.

This doesn't mean that the giant beaver is now the official state fossil, that's hopefully coming though. The Science Museum of Minnesota Fitzpatrick Chair of Paleontology, Alex Hastings, spoke to Bring Me the News about this and said they're "'confident' the voting process will lead to the state Legislature declaring the giant beaver the official state fossil."

By the way, I didn't realize just how big giant beavers were. I guess they're about the size of a small bear. Geez! You can see a fossil of a giant beaver the next time you take a trip up to the Science Museum of Minnesota.

This actually reminds me, there's a house that at least used to be for sale in Minnesota that was filled with taxidermied exotic animals. Keep scrolling for pictures.
