The film, which is set for release on Nov. 1, 2019, follows Tubman's escape from slavery and mission to free other slaves through the Underground Railroad. Directed by Kassi Lemmons, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Gregory Allen Howard, Harriet stars Cynthia Erivo in the titular role, as well as Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Clarke Peters and pop and R&B star Janelle Monaé.
It isn't the first time Nettles has tried her hand at acting: The country star previously portrayed Roxie Hart in Broadway's Chicago and Avie Lee Parton in the Coat of Many Colors series. On Twitter, the singer gushed about how excited she was for the film's release and sung the praises of its starring actor: "It's here!! It's here!! It's finally here!!!" she wrote, posting a link to the clip. "Check out the trailer link below and catch a peek of my character below. And go check out the film on November 1!! [Erivo] is masterful!!"
Nettles is best known as one half of Sugarland, alongside Kristian Bush. Most recently, the duo dropped their 2018 album Bigger, their first project together since they had announced their hiatus five years earlier. In her solo career, Nettles released a new song, "I Can Do Hard Things," in February. The singer has long been vocal about her passion for social justice, from offering support to sexual assault victims to speaking out in support of the LGBTQ+ community, making her participation in a film celebrating a famed civil rights warrior even more meaningful.
