If like most of us, you're getting a little stir-crazy after being cooped up with the kids at home all week, the Minnesota DNR updated their list of what's open and closed during the on-going coronavirus outbreak.

If cabin fever is starting to set in, maybe taking the family and getting outside this weekend is something you might want put on the schedule. But perhaps you're also wondering if our many state parks and recreation areas in Minnesota even open right now.

Well, wonder no more. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has just updated their list of what's closed-- and, maybe more importantly, what's actually OPEN-- during our on-going coronavirus outbreak.

And, as luck would have it, YES, Minnesota's State Parks ARE open. According to an email from the DNR,

State parks, state forests, recreation areas, and other public lands remain open. The following facilities will remain open at state parks:

  • Outdoor areas, campgrounds, camper cabins, yurts, remote campsites, overnight lodging facilities and some group centers
  • Highway rest areas at Grand Portage, Gooseberry Falls and Tettegouche state parks
  • Bathrooms, shower buildings and vault toilets that are already open for the season will remain open

Of course, there are some things that are CLOSED, though. They include:

  • Park offices, visitor centers, nature stores, trail centers, indoor interpretive exhibits and enclosed picnic shelters
  • Most park bathrooms with running water are still closed for the season and will remain closed

In addition, some other programs and events are also not happening right now due to the coronavirus outbreak. The DNR said all naturalist programs and public events at state parks are canceled until further notice. This includes visitor center programs, outdoor events and school group activities.
