This State Led the Midwest with People Moving Away in 2023
This state led the Midwest with the highest percentage of people moving away, and it's a Minnesota neighbor. Another one of our neighbors is among the top-ten states that people moved to last year.
The annual report by United Van Lines reveals what cities and states lead the way with the most moves to, and most moves away in 2023.
Vermont had the greatest percentage of people moving in last year, while New Jersey was on top of the list of states with the most people moving out.
The Top Ten Inbound States for 2023

- North Carolina
- South Dakota
- Alabama
- New Mexico
- West Virginia
Several states also saw nearly the same number of residents moving inbound as outbound. Nevada and Utah were among these balanced states.

What About Minnesota & Its Neighbors?
Minnesota came in at 30th on the inbound movers list. As far as the rest of our neighbors, as we see above, South Dakota was 7th, Iowa was 22nd, Wisconsin was 27th, and North Dakota 47th.
The United Van Lines study also unveils the top reasons that Americans gave for moving in 2023. The top answer was a new job or company transfer, followed by retirement, being closer to family, lifestyle change, and moving to a place with an improved cost of living.
