The folks from the website bid-on-equipment.com have come out with a report on fast food franchises as far as start up costs, failure rate and which one is most popular in each state.

Chick-Fil-A ranks the most popular start up franchise in 12 states with most primarily in the southeast. The most popular start up in Minnesota is also one of the least expensive; Subway. Start-up costs range from $89,000 to $328,000. On the down side the failure rate for Subway comes at 23%. Not good at all.The most expensive start-up is KFC with costs ranging from $1.4 million to $2.7 million. The failure rate comes in at 13%.

To our west it's Burger King leading the way in start-ups in South Dakota, Montana and Nebraska. To our east, Jimmy John's leads the way in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and Missouri.

Best bets for success? According to the Small Business Administration default list, Taco Bell and Whataburger check in with a 0% failure rate.

If you want an example of how prices have changed, I am fairly sure that a fellow I knew back in the early 80's told me it cost him $60.000 to start up a new McDonalds. Today that cost ranges from $433,000 to $2.2 million.
