Halloween is officially my favorite holiday and I wanted to express my love for it and why I believe it is the best holiday, so here are my reasons (yes, it is more than just candy)

  1. We Celebrate By Buying Candy and Giving Candy

I mean you can’t go wrong with a holiday that consists of giving and eating as much candy as you desire! As someone who is all about sweets I can’t lie, this part is awesome!

  1. It Is During One of the Best Seasons: Fall!

Fall is just honestly one of the best seasons, especially in Minnesota. The weather starts to cool down but not too cold (just yet) and the colors in nature are just Absolutely beautiful. I mean we have thanksgiving during the fall, but it is towards the end. The days and months or so leading up to Halloween are filled with amazing sunny days with bright-colored trees!

  1. We Get to Decorate Our Houses Inside and Out

This one might be more specific to me, but I just love decorating the house to make it feel more festive! And this year a lot of stores set the bar high. Target had beautiful collections and so did Michael’s (as always) and even Joann Fabrics (which was the true winner in my mind this year).

  1. It’s a Way to Celebrate All Things Supernatural and Things We Can’t Explain

Personally, one thing that really makes life great is wondering what is out there. What is real, what is not, and how can we explain some of the things we experience? I really am a true believer in ghosts and all paranormal and to have a holiday where we as a society share our spooky stories and try to replicate what is out there: that is cool and why this holiday is cool.

  1. It’s A Way to Honor the Dead; A Different Way to Look At the Afterlife

I guess in continuation of the last point when diving into ghosts and the dead specifically, Halloween gives us a chance to maybe share how we grieve, or how we feel about life after death.

  1. Pop Culture Around Halloween is The Best

Honestly, my favorite part of the holiday besides decorating is also indulging in all the activities associated with fall and Halloween, as well as bringing all scary movies and tv shows! Whether it is spending a day at a pumpkin patch or harvest festival or waiting till a new scary movie comes out and binging the latest scary tv show on Netflix, I love diving into this part of our culture. And I mean, the possibilities are endless, there are so many scary or thrilling shows to watch, so many activities to try around our state, and so many fall activities to do like baking or crafts, you can never run out of fun festivities. Also, slasher movies are one of my favorite genres and I am always excited every year to see what new slasher movies have in store.

  1. Its Not Just Celebrating One Nation or One Religion, But A Time to Celebrate Many Beliefs

We celebrate Halloween as a whole community, a whole neighborhood, and almost the whole world. In addition to this, this time of the year is also when El Día de Los Muertos occurs (Day of The Dead) (around October 31-November 2. While October 31 is Halloween, November 2 is All Souls Day or the Day of the Dead). According to histoy.com, this is “a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink, and celebration. A blend of Mesoamerican ritual, European religion, and Spanish culture.”

Not only that, but Halloween is really a collection of past religious beliefs. History.com explains that “The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.” While this is true, because this occurred over 2,000 years ago, the meanings behind activities, celebrations, and names have evolved into many things. It is also noted that it used to be a time to explain and mourn the death of crops, and those who lived thousands of years ago believed it was because of the supernatural. Christianity evolved it to All Souls Day around the 9th century and then around the time it came to America, it was a time to celebrate the harvest season. I defiantly did not cover everything, but if you want to read more about it, click here for history.com’s article on Halloween.

In summary, I just love this time of year so much, and love that we have a holiday like Halloween to step away from the norm and just have fun!
