Woman with Down Syndrome to Compete in Miss Minnesota USA Pageant
A 22-year-old Minnesotan is making history, as she'll be the first woman with Down Syndrome to compete in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant.
In fact, as far as pageant officials know, she will be the first woman with Down Syndrome to compete in the country.
Mikayla Holmgren, a student at Bethel University and a St. Croix, Minnesota, resident, recently learned she had been selected after simply submitting an application.
According to an interview with KARE11, Holmgrem says "I want to do this. My mom is so freaked out, but I want to do this."
The Miss Minnesota pageant will take place November 25-26 in Burnsville. The winner will then represent the state in the Miss USA pageant.
This isn't Mikayla's first go-round at pageantry, either, as she won the Minnesota Junior Miss Amazing pageant back in 2015.
I absolutely love this. It's the perfect example of someone not letting their disability stand in their way of their goals and living each day to their fullest. I really hope she wins! Good luck, Mikayla!
