Get the Sprinklers & Popsicles Ready! Minnesota’s Summer Outlook Released
As June approaches, and the start of meteorological summer, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center has released its official climate outlook for the months of June, July, and August for Minnesota.
With plentiful rainfall across Minnesota this spring, the drought conditions have essentially come to an end for most of the state, but according to NOAA's CPC we will likely see a trend towards things drying out again over the summer.
Minnesota Drought Monitor as of 5/16/23
Southern Minnesota and most of the rest of the state of Minnesota are above average for rainfall so far this season, but again, it looks like we'll be leaning towards a dry summer in Minnesota.
As far as the temperature outlook for Minnesota during the Summer of 2023, the Climate Prediction Center says the entire country is trending towards above normal temperatures -- with Minnesota included in an elevated likelihood for a hotter than normal summer.
The normal average high temperature in Minnesota for June is 79. In July that climbs to 83, and in August the average high is 80 -- so according to NOAA we should be warmer than that.
Its also worth mentioning that extreme heat has been the third leading cause of weather-related fatalities in Minnesota since 1990. During that period eighteen people have died from high heat and humidity. Only tornadoes and flooding have killed more people in the last 25 years.
Lakes & pools will likely be crowded this summer, with backyard sprinklers running overtime. Now is the time to stock up on sunscreen, kool-aid, and popsicles. Stay cool and have fun!
