Albert Lea, MN (KROC-AM news) - A Brownsville man was sentenced Friday to over 25 years in prison for a fatal shooting last year at a State Park near Albert Lea.

27-year-old David Easter was also ordered to pay over $5,000 in restitution to the family of 23-year-old Spencer Brown. Easter was convicted earlier this year of second-degree murder for shooting and killing Brown following an altercation at a campground in Myre-Big Island State Park on August 23, 2016.

Easter was the person who called 911 to report the fatal shooting, and tried to claim he was acting in self-defense. During his trial, the prosecution argued his claim did not match the evidence found at the scene, noting the victim had been shot sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle with the windows up, the transmission in reverse, and his foot on the brake.

Easter was also found guilty of a gross misdemeanor charge for carrying a gun without a permit and was given a concurrent jail term for that conviction.
