The maple syrup taps are flowing at River Bend Nature Center in Faribault. About 240 gallons have been collected so far and volunteers need to help in the collection of sap and also to keep the fire going at the evaporator. Volunteers are asked to commit to a two- or three-hour shift. No experience is needed and training will be provided. You can contact River Bend at (507) 332-7151,

River Bend will be offering a couple of workshops where you can learn and experience the complete process of making maple syrup. You'll also learn about the history of making maple syrup.The first one will be Wednesday, March 8, from 4-6PM. The cost is $5, or $3 if you're a River Bend member. The second one will be on Saturday the 11th from 10AM to noon.

There will also be a Maple Syrup Open House at River Bend on Saturday, March 18, from 10AM to noon.

About 80 percent of the world's maple syrup comes from Canada. Top U.S. states are Vermont, New York, Maine, Wisconsin and New Hampshire.
