April showers are upon us. It's been fairly gloomy in Owatonna this week, not to mention, a bit chilly, but don't let it get you down because we are almost to May! And hopefully, that means warmer weather, sunshine, and May flowers.

To have a beautiful flower garden, you need to think insightfully, and it all starts at the garden center.

Step 1:

Look for high-quality bulbs. It's important to pick ones that are plump and firm, not soft and mushy.

Pro tip: Buy bigger bulbs. The bigger the bulb, the bigger the bloom.

Step 2:

Pick the perfect spot. Most bulbs do best in full sun, aka at least 6 hours of direct sun a day, and well-drained soil, but that's not to say that's true for every bulb. You can check out this Plant Encyclopedia to get specific details on your bulbs.

Step 3:

Timing is everything. Tulips and daffodils should be planted in fall when the soil temperatures have cooled and Dahlia and gladiolus, for example, are best planted in the spring.

Step 4:

Make sure to plant them deep enough! In general, dig a hole two to three times deeper than the bulb is tall. So if you have a 2-inch-tall bulb, dig a hole 4 to 6 inches deep.

Step 5:

Place the pointed side of the bulb upward. The root goes downward.

Once you have your bulbs planted, make sure to use good soil, stop weeds from invasion, and water well.

Beautiful flower beds scream Spring, and I am full-heartedly ready to move into warmer weather.
