We've talked about small towns before. Some have populations of less than 40 people! But we haven't talked about small counties. So which county is the smallest in Minnesota? The answer actually surprised me!

In case you didn't know, the smallest town in Minnesota is a little town called Funkley. It's up in north central Minnesota and as of the 2021 census they have a population of 12. Just 12! That's crazy.

That's kind of expected, though. The smallest town being in the middle of nowhere makes sense. But Minnesota's smallest county threw me off.

Minnesota's Smallest County by Area

Yes, we're talking about the smallest county by area right now. The smallest county in Minnesota (by area) is Ramsey County! Yeah, the one with St. Paul in it. It's only 170 square miles. The next smallest one is more than twice that size, which is Scott County. It's 368 square miles.

Minnesota's Smallest County by Population

Naturally, we need to know which Minnesota county is the smallest based on population size now too. That would be Traverse County. They're right on the border of both South Dakota and North Dakota.

The population of the entire county as of the 2020 census was 3,360. In the entire county, which is 586 square miles. It's more than three times the size of Ramsey County but with 540,000 fewer people. That's wild.
